Student sets sights on Silicon Valley

He won the top prize in Calculus at ACG Pathways and further maths awards at the University of Auckland where he’s studying Engineering. Eventually, ACG Ambassador Boyi Ji, 24, sees himself heading to Silicon Valley.

What made you decide to do a Foundation course in New Zealand?

My agent introduced me to the idea of studying in NZ and I was interested in experiencing life here.

How has ACG Pathways helped you on your journey?
It was really helpful. The classes I took with ACG laid a good foundation for my study at the University of Auckland, and whenever I asked for help, the staff there were always very patient in assisting me.

What was the highlight of your pathways course?

When I got the prize in Calculus for my Foundation study year.

What is your favourite thing about New Zealand?

Waiheke Island – I like to go fishing there.

Why did you choose a degree in Engineering at the University of Auckland?

It will feel good to make a contribution to society through my knowledge and design, which is the main goal of engineering. Engineering can also be a very beneficial career, which will challenge me.

What do you most love about the subjects you’re studying?

I enjoy the challenge of maths and science and the fact that almost nothing goes right the first time!

What are your career aspirations?

I look forward to enhancing my skills in control system design. My dream is to get hands-on experience in as many technical projects as I can and master the skills required.

What are you proud of in your time in New Zealand?

My academic prizes: a certificate of high distinction in the Australian maths competition and a merit prize in Math 108 at the University of Auckland.

Where would you like to see yourself in ten years?

Silicon Valley, USA.

What advice would you give to a student thinking of taking a Pathways course?

Stay focused and work hard, set goals and study routines and, most importantly, relax and don’t stress!

Boyi Ji completed the University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies at ACG Pathways. He is from China.
