With Rotorua continuing to shine as a premier tourist destination in New Zealand, NZMA will open its first campus there this month, to deliver hospitality programmes for the local community.
According to NZMA’s Regional Manager for Manukau, Northland and Bay of Plenty, Monique Le Marque, the arrival of NZMA in Rotorua will bring great benefits to locals.
“NZMA is a well-established and leading hospitality management school, and we first offered programmes last year from the NZST campus. As part of our long-term strategy in the region, opening the Rotorua campus signals the local demand for quality skills, and we aim to cater for students keen to study hospitality,” she said. “There are plans to grow international student numbers which will benefit the Rotorua economy.”
The New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service, Level 2 and 3 programmes take six months to complete, and will be offered from the Eruera Street campus. They will cover everything from barista training, customer service and making non-alcoholic beverages, to baking, food costing and tourism. Practical work placements are also included in the programme, which gives students the essential hands-on experience to ensure they can hit the ground running.

With the recent government announcement of fees-free tertiary study, local students have a fantastic opportunity to gain free qualifications to launch their career. All New Zealand students who finish school in 2017, or will finish school during 2018, qualify for a year of free provider-based tertiary education or industry training up to a cap of $12,000 per year.
The policy will also benefit those locals who aren’t school leavers but are keen to get some training. There are no age restrictions, and adults who have done half a full-time year of tertiary education or training may also qualify for fees-free.
Monique continued, “Rotorua is a top tourism destination for New Zealand, and the hospitality industry is very much a part of this. The programmes NZMA will be delivering in Rotorua for 2018 are just the beginning. Longer term we will be looking to offer our full suite of hospitality and hotel management programmes Level 2 to 7.”
