Meet Christy Cheung – registered nurse

After studying at an ACG Pathways course, Christy Cheung worked towards her dream career in nursing.

Christy, from Hong Kong, completed the fast-track AUT Certificate in Foundation Studies in 2014. She went on to graduate from AUT University with a Bachelor degree in Health Science specialising in Nursing.

“The foundation course allowed me to progress to university more easily. It also helped me adapt to the NZ education system, its history and Maori culture,” says Christy.

“I made many friends from different countries and my teachers were very friendly and supportive.”

Christy chose nursing because she knew it would be a rewarding career. She enjoyed all aspects of the degree, including the theory, practical learning and clinical placements.

“Nursing is a career which involves learning continuously and I really enjoy being exposed to new knowledge every day.”

She has now graduated from AUT, received her nursing license and been offered a job as a registered nurse in a retirement home. Eventually she would like to work in general medicine in a hospital and one day become a nurse specialist.

She recommends her educational journey to other international students.

“I feel proud to have obtained a degree in NZ because NZ is very welcoming to international students and its tertiary education is good,” she said.

“You have to work hard to become successful, but I believe that students should also play hard at the same time!”
