Aspiring nutritionist hopes to improve public health

Bai Khiem (Kevin) Ha, is 19 and comes from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

He’s in his first year of study at the University of Auckland, doing a conjoint of Bachelor of Health Science, majoring in Population Nutrition, and Bachelor of Law.

His degree provides an opportunity to learn about and link a broad range of health-related topics, as well as understanding the relationship between law and society. Eventually, he hopes to do a PhD in nutrition and then work toward changing public health by improving what people eat, especially what students are eating at schools.

Kevin completed the University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies through ACG Pathways in order to gain admission to the university. Pathways gave him the opportunity to relearn, in English, the scientific subjects he needed for his degree.

“It really helped broaden and enhance what I had learnt in my home country, especially in Chemistry and Biology,” he said. “I had the chance to challenge myself to understand the content and develop critical thinking skills.”

Despite those subjects being his weakest at school, Kevin went on to become the top achiever in Chemistry and Biology at ACG Pathways, giving him confidence and encouragement for his future studies. He said his teachers were behind his success.

“They were willing to spend their time answering any questions that I had. They supported me not only knowledge wise but also helped me grow as a better individual.”

His advice to future students?

“Consider how a Foundation Course will help you achieve your goals, and don’t hesitate to ask if you need help. The teachers are more than happy to help, it’s no trouble for them at all.”
